Frequently Asked Questions
We sit down with you to discuss your child’s history and ask questions such as:
• When did your child start stammering?
• Is there a family history of stammering?
• When is their speech smoothest or most bumpy?
• What already seems to help?
We assess receptive and expressive language skills and, when appropriate, ask your child about their experience of stammering. This helps us build a clear picture of their needs and make a tailored plan going forward.
Therapy is a partnership between you and your therapist. Lidcombe and Palin PCI are highly effective for younger children. Older children may use fluency shaping techniques and explore the feelings linked to stammering. The overall focus is to make therapy playful, engaging and meaningful so your child can understand their stammer and feel more confident.
We typically see children from around three years old. For younger children, therapy may centre on giving parents practical strategies and environmental adjustments that support fluency at home.

Therapy is tailored to each individual. A typical programme may include:
• Stammer identification exploring what happens physically and psychologically during a stammer
• Desensitisation addressing any feelings or behaviours linked to the stammer, especially helpful for covert stammerers
• Fluency modification working on fluency shaping and block modification
Because stammering is complex and unique to each person, we consider all contributing factors. The goal is to support you to become a more effective communicator overall.
We offer therapy at our Stratford clinic, 10 Harley Street, online or at your home or workplace.
