Preparing SENCos and Teachers: Essential Speech and Language Training
Supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) requires teachers and Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCos) to stay updated with practical, evidence-informed strategies. To achieve this, specialised training days provide hands-on activities, real-world examples, and opportunities for discussion, allowing school staff to leave with tools they can confidently apply in their own settings.
Our comprehensive training sessions cover a wide range of classroom strategies suitable for both primary and secondary education. Key areas of focus typically include:
- Therapy Informed Approaches: Staff learn specific techniques to support early communicators and non-speaking pupils.
- Developmental Language Disorder (DLD): Training provides a clear understanding of DLD and outlines how to support these specific learners in a busy classroom environment.
- Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) and AAC: Educators receive an introduction to GLP and learn the effective use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to boost a student’s communication and participation.
- NeuroAffirming Practices: Sessions emphasise the use of neurodivergent-affirming language and inclusive practices to ensure all students feel secure and understood.
- Monitoring Progress: Teachers learn exactly how to monitor and measure the effectiveness of their interventions and support strategies over time.
These training events are delivered by one of our experienced Speech and Language Therapists and Neurodiversity Service leads, combining clinical expertise with a strong understanding of the daily realities of school environments.
London Speech Therapy regularly runs specific SENCo training days at their clinics, such as their Stratford location. Attendance for these full-day sessions costs £50 per person, but places are provided completely free of charge if a school already has an existing relationship with the therapy provider.
